FAQ
Removals to Brazil: common questions
The cost of a removal to Brazil depends mainly on volume and the type of container you choose, rather than a single fixed price. For an exclusive container, a 20 foot unit of around 33 cubic metres starts from about GBP 6,000, and a 40 foot unit of around 65 cubic metres starts from about GBP 9,000, with the final figure confirmed at collection and subject to currency and market changes. If you are sending less, a shared container is more economical, because you pay only for the space your belongings occupy, priced by cubic metre above five cubic metres or by box below it. Import taxes and local charges in Brazil are separate from the shipping cost and depend on your circumstances, particularly whether you qualify as a returning resident sending used personal effects. Because the right option depends entirely on how much you are moving, a short survey gives an accurate quote. Our guide to shipping costs to Brazil explains how each factor shapes the final price.
A removal to Brazil by sea takes on average 60 to 120 days from collection to final delivery, and the exact time depends on three things: the shipping option, the customs clearance, and the final destination within Brazil. An exclusive container is usually faster than a shared one, where consolidated shipments typically run from 70 to 120 days because they wait to be filled and combined. The customs stage is the part that varies most, and it is where delays usually happen when paperwork is incomplete, which is why the documentation stage matters so much. A shipment with a correct inventory and the right documents clears far more smoothly. The distance from the port of entry to the final address in Brazil also adds time. Because of this range, it is wise to plan ahead and avoid relying on belongings arriving by an exact date. The how it works section on this page sets out each stage of the journey and where the time is spent.
Shipping personal belongings to Brazil requires specific documents prepared in advance, and missing paperwork is the most common cause of delay or extra charges. Before shipping you will generally need a Brazilian passport with all pages legible, an RG or CNH showing front and back, and proof of residence abroad, which can be either fourteen months of month by month bank statements in PDF or a residence certificate issued by a Brazilian consulate. The shipping guides must also be signed. On the day of shipping, a boarding ticket to Brazil is required. Once in Brazil, you will need proof of a Brazilian address and a simple notarisation by similarity on the shipping guides, done at a notary in Brazil or at a consulate. These requirements follow Receita Federal norm 1059 of 2010 and can change, so it is important to confirm the current rules for your case. Our guide to Brazilian customs for personal belongings explains each document and where to obtain it.
Removals to Brazil are for personal belongings only, not commercial goods, and every item must show signs of prior use and not be intended for resale, in line with Brazilian customs rules. Items that can normally be shipped include clothing and shoes, kitchenware and household appliances, furniture, books, toys, baby items and personal tools. A number of categories are prohibited and can be seized or destroyed by customs, including new or commercial products, food and perishables, medicines and supplements, weapons and dangerous goods, flammable liquids, plants and animal products, and high value items such as jewellery, cash and precious metals. Notably, high value electronics such as phones, tablets and laptops, along with loose batteries and battery powered vehicles, are also restricted. Because the list is detailed and the rules can change, it is worth checking any uncertain item before it is packed rather than risking it at the port. Our guide on what you can ship to Brazil sets out the allowed and prohibited categories in full.
