FAQ
Removals to Europe: common questions
The cost of a removal from the UK to Europe depends on volume, distance and the type of service, rather than a single fixed rate. The main factors are how much you are moving, from a few boxes to a full home, how far the destination is, and whether you use a dedicated van for your move alone or share space on a scheduled route to keep the price down. Access and parking at both ends, and any extras such as packing or furniture dismantling, also affect the total. Since Brexit, customs handling is part of a European move too, which is a factor that a purely domestic move does not have. Because of these variables, a reliable figure comes from a short survey of what you are sending rather than a headline price. Fuel, tolls and the route all feed into it. Our guide to European moving costs explains how each element shapes the final quote and how to plan a realistic budget.
A road removal from the UK to Europe usually takes anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the destination and the type of service. A dedicated van carrying only your belongings is the quickest, travelling more or less directly to the delivery address. A shared or scheduled route can take longer, because the vehicle follows a set itinerary and combines several moves, which is the trade-off for a lower price. Distance is the obvious factor, but customs clearance also plays a part since Brexit, and this is where delays appear when paperwork is incomplete, so correct documents keep things moving. The final leg to the delivery address within the destination country adds time as well. Because of this range, it is wise to plan ahead rather than rely on an exact arrival day. Our removals to Europe service page explains how the journey works and where the time is spent, so you can plan around a realistic window.
Yes. Since the UK left the European Union, moving personal belongings from the UK to an EU country requires customs documentation, which was not the case before. The exact requirements depend on the destination and your circumstances, but a detailed inventory of everything being moved is essential, because customs assesses the shipment against it. People relocating their main residence may be able to claim relief from import duty and VAT on used personal belongings under a transfer of residence scheme, provided the conditions are met, though the rules and paperwork vary by country. New items, or goods that look commercial, are treated differently. Because these rules are set by each country and can change, it is important to confirm the current requirements for your destination rather than assume, and to prepare the inventory carefully and in good time. A professional mover will guide you through the documentation. Our guide to customs when moving abroad explains the paperwork and how to prepare it.
Yes. You do not need a full house move to use a European removal service. Loads range from a single suitcase or a few boxes right up to the contents of a whole home, which makes it practical for students, people moving into furnished accommodation, or anyone sending only part of their belongings. Smaller shipments usually travel on a shared or scheduled route, where you pay for the space you use rather than for a whole van, which keeps the cost down. Larger or time-sensitive moves can use a dedicated van that carries only your belongings and travels directly. The right option depends on how much you are sending and how quickly you need it to arrive, which a short survey establishes. It is worth grouping and listing everything clearly, as a proper inventory is needed for customs in any case. Our packing services and materials can help prepare a smaller shipment so it travels safely alongside other loads.
Most household belongings can be moved to Europe, but some categories are restricted or prohibited, and this is set by customs and transport rules rather than by the removal company. Items that generally cannot be shipped include commercial goods intended for resale, weapons and hazardous materials, flammable liquids and fuel engines, large or loose batteries, medicines, and food, drinks and perishables. Anything of animal, plant or similar origin is also restricted, as these can carry biosecurity controls. New items in commercial quantities may be treated as imports rather than personal effects, which changes how they are handled. Because the detail matters and the rules can change between countries, it is worth checking any uncertain item before it is packed rather than discovering a problem in transit. Preparing an accurate inventory also helps, since customs checks the shipment against it. Our guide on what you can move abroad sets out the allowed and restricted categories, and you can always ask us about anything you are unsure of.
With a professional mover, belongings are normally protected in transit, but the cover has conditions that are worth understanding before you book. EUROBR carries standard goods in transit insurance on its services, and for a European move this applies to items professionally packed by our team, with an item list and invoices provided, since the inventory is what a claim is assessed against. Some categories are typically excluded from standard cover, including fragile items such as glass, ceramics, jewellery and artwork, as well as plants and pets, so these need particular care or separate arrangements. This is common across the removals industry rather than unique to any one company. Informal operators may carry little or no cover at all, which is a real risk over a long international journey. Before booking, it is reasonable to ask exactly what is and is not covered and to read the terms. The paperwork behind international road transport is explained on our CMR regulations page.
